TMC MP Mahua Moitra faces charges from Delhi Police for making “derogatory” comments on the NCW Chief

Mahua Moitra, a leader of the Trinamool Congress and Krishnanagar MP, was the subject of a formal complaint (FIR) filed on Sunday by the Delhi Police IFSO section for her ‘crude’ statements directed at NCW Chief Rekha Sharma. The Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) has Section 79, which deals with actions meant to insult a woman’s modesty. Moitra has been accused under this section.

After Moitra’s comments, the NCW demanded that a FIR be filed against her, acting immediately. Moitra made a social media comment on a video that appeared to show Sharma at the scene of the Hathras stampede in Uttar Pradesh on July 4. A man walking behind Sharma with an umbrella caught Moitra’s attention and she commented, “She is too busy holding up her boss’s pajamas.” The post was later removed by Mahua Moitra.

“It is unacceptable and a breach of a woman’s right to dignity when someone makes such offensive statements. This comment is subject to Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, 2023, as noted by the Commission, the NCW stated in a post on X.

According to the NCW, “a thorough action report should be sent to the Commission within three days and a formal complaint should be filed against Moitra.”

“Come on Delhi Police, please take action immediately on these suo moto orders,” Mahua Moitra commented in response to NCW’s post. In case you require my assistance with a swift arrest within the next three days, I am in Nadia. I am Able to Carry My Own Parasol.”

Mahua Moitra also posted screenshots purportedly from Rekha Sharma’s account in another post, and these too had “crude” posts. wrote Moitra, “Also Delhi Police, while you are at it, could you submit an FIR on other serial offender under your new Act.”
