The Indian Medical Association filed a petition against Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurveda, alleging “false and malicious ads.” The Supreme Court has ordered the company to cease producing deceptive advertisements disparaging modern medications and vaccines.
In addition to warning Patanjali to cease its deceptive advertisements, the Supreme Court threatened to impose “hefty penalties” of up to Rs 1 crore on each product if the company persisted in offering false cures.
In order to avoid turning the matter into an argument between allopathy and ayurveda, the bench made up of justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah & Prashant Kumar Mishra also instructed the Union Government to submit a proposal to address deceptive medical advertising.
The Supreme Court’s aim is to identify a “real solution” to the issue of deceptive medical advertising.
In the petition filed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Ramdev is accused of making contentious remarks, such as denouncing Allopathy as a ‘foolish and ineffective science.’ Additionally, in a half-page advertisement released in July of the previous year, the promotional material conveyed a message stating, “False beliefs propagated by Allopathy: Protect yourself and the nation from the misconceptions promoted by the Pharmaceutical and Medical Industry.”
“What happened to Baba Ramdev?” asked then-Indian Chief Justice N V Ramana during the case’s final hearing in August of last year. He can make his system more well-known, so why should he disparage other systems? All of us hold him in great regard. Although he made yoga more widely known, he shouldn’t belittle other systems. Is there a guarantee that Ayurveda will treat every type of illness? He is powerless to reject the physician system. When misusing other systems, he needs to use moderation.
