Arvind Kejriwal’s bail extension plea rejected by SC; he must surrender by June 2

Arvind Kejriwal filed a request for a seven-day extension of his interim release in a corruption case related to the Delhi liquor policy case, but the Supreme Court of India denied it. The Delhi Chief Minister was given temporary permission by the highest court to run in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections last month, but they also demanded that he turn himself in on June 2.

According to a newswire PTI report, the highest court registry declined to accept the application, stating that Kejriwal’s plea is not maintainable because he was granted permission to petition the trial court for regular release.

When the case was being heard by Justice Dipankar Datta, the main bench judge, last week, the top court questioned Senior Advocate Abhishek Singhvi, who was representing the chief minister, on Tuesday about why the Delhi CM’s plea had not been presented.

Given his “sudden and unexplained weight loss coupled with high ketone levels,” which are symptomatic of kidney, major cardiac problems, and even cancer, Arvind Kejriwal has requested a seven-day extension of his interim release so that he can undertake a variety of medical tests, including a PET-CT scan.

The chief minister announced in his most recent plea, filed on May 26, that he will turn himself in to jail officials on June 9 rather than June 2, as was initially planned.

In order to allow the chief minister to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, the top court on May 10 granted him 21 days of temporary bail. The chief minister had been detained in connection with a money laundering case involving the excise policy “scam.”

It had stipulated that Arvind Kejriwal must give himself up on June 2, the day following the conclusion of the last round of the seven-phase election.

Delhi Chief Minister is accused of money laundering and corruption in the excise policy scandal. The accusations concern the creation and implementation of the excise policy for 2021–2022 that the Delhi government has since rejected.
