Coca-Cola India Launches 100 pc Recycled PET Bottles in Orissa

Beginning in Orissa, Coca-Cola India is launching Coca-Cola in ASSP (Affordable Small Sparkling Package) bottles made entirely of recycled PET (rPET), marking a significant step towards the promotion of a circular economy. This program demonstrates Coca-Cola’s dedication to sustainability and lowering its carbon impact in India’s retail industry.

Coca-Cola’s bottling partner, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd. (HCCBPL), makes the bottles. Because rPET makes PET material lighter than traditional virgin PET packaging, it lowers emissions by 36% when used in ASSP packaging. When compared to non-ASSP packaging made of virgin PET, the switch to rPET results in an overall reduction of 66 percent in carbon footprint.

  • The addition of recycled PET to ASSP is a critical step towards plastic circularity, stressing a significant decrease in the overall carbon footprint, according to Alok Sharma, Executive Director, Supply Chain, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB). This program fits with our overarching goal to expand sustainable practices and set the standard for a more environmentally friendly future for India’s beverage sector.”
  • According to Enrique Ackermann, Vice President of Technical Innovation and Supply Chain at Coca-Cola India and Southwest Asia, the company is committed to providing consumers in India with more high-grade, food-grade recycled plastic, and their efforts to expand rPET in India are a testimonial to this. We hope to advance a circular economy for packaging, lower waste and carbon emissions, and get closer to the World Without Waste target of 50% recycled material in bottles by 2030 with the help of these environmentally friendly bottles.”

Over 40 countries worldwide, Coca-Cola sells bottles made entirely of recycled PET. As part of its World Without Waste campaign, the firm plans to utilize at least 50% recycled material in its packaging by 2030, collect and recycle one bottle or can for each one it sells by 2030, and make all of its packaging recyclable by 2025.
