Donald Trump holds first campaign rally after assassination attempt

On Saturday, Donald Trump will host his first campaign rally since he barely avoided being assassinated a week ago and just after his nominating convention, which solidified his control of the Republican Party.

Along with Ohio U.S. Senator J.D. Vance, his newly selected vice presidential candidate, Trump is scheduled to make an appearance in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a battleground state. This will be their first joint campaign appearance as the officially recognized Republican presidential ticket.

Republican Unity and Democratic Instability Ahead of the Election

Republican Party officials declared that Donald Trump had been transformed by his near-death experience last Saturday and that he would advocate for unity in the country at his acceptance speech on Thursday night at the Republican Party convention in Milwaukee.

Trump’s well-known list of complaints and attacks on opponents accounted for a large portion of his speech, even though he started it with a call for togetherness and national healing.

What kind of speech Trump will give on Saturday is unknown, but his ardent followers usually show out to these kinds of gatherings to hear his more conventionally aggressive statements.

Following this week’s nominating convention, the Republican Party will be united behind Trump and Vance when they take the stage in Grand Rapids. The Democrats, on the other hand, are in disarray, and it is no longer guaranteed that President Joe Biden will be the Democratic nominee running against Trump on November 5.

Following his dismal debate performance against Trump last month, Biden is witnessing an increasing number of requests from members of his own party to resign as the party’s nominee for president and to withdraw his reelection campaign.

In every swing state where Biden is up against Trump, he is lagging behind in opinion polls. Many Democrats worry that he might not have much of a chance to win and that the party needs to nominate a different presidential candidate to challenge Trump.

Unlike the protest in Butler, Pennsylvania last weekend, which was held outdoors, the Grand Rapids gathering will take place inside an arena. The gunman managed to get over the Secret Service barrier and climb the roof of a building at that event. He then opened fire on Donald Trump, cutting his ear, killing one rally attendee, and wounded multiple others.

Security Concerns and Secret Service’s Response

Regarding security for the event in Grand Rapids, the U.S. Secret Service, which is in charge of defending Trump, chose not to comment. An inquiry of the Butler rally’s security lapses is currently underway.

The service released a statement saying, “The Secret Service does not discuss the means and methods used for our protective operations.”

During his speech to the convention on Thursday, Donald Trump revealed his near-death experience in great detail, adding that he was speaking to them “by the grace of Almighty God.”
