Mahua Moitra gets her 3rd  notice to leave her Delhi govt apartment

Mahua Moitra, the leader of the Trinamool Congress Party (TMC), was sent a new notice on Wednesday to leave her government-allocated residence in New Delhi. Moitra has been served with notice three times by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ Directorate of Estate to leave her official home. This notice coincides with her expulsion from the Lok Sabha due to the ‘cash-for-query’ case.

According to the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorized Occupants) Act, 1971, “the Applicant vide Letter dated 08.01.2024 requested to initiate eviction proceedings against, you,” stated the notice from the Directorate of Estates’ Office of the Estate Officer and Assistant Director of Estates (Litigation). Mahua received the second notification from the Ministry of Urban Development on January 11 of this year.

The leader of the TMC had filed an application with the Delhi High Court to have the notice that the Directorate of Estate had sent to terminate her government housing in the nation’s capital quashed. The plea claimed that on December 11, 2023, she received a notice directing her to leave the house by January 7, 2024, failing which legal action would be taken in accordance with the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorized Occupants Act) 1971 (the “PP Act 1971”).

The request asked for permission to keep her living in the government apartment until the general election results in 2024. It further claimed that, in the event of a general election, the petitioner’s capacity to host and interact with party members, lawmakers, other politicians, constituents on visit, important stakeholders, and other dignitaries would be severely impeded by the lack of government accommodations.

Following a debate on the Ethics Committee report on the “cash for query” that was presented in the Lower House, Moitra was ejected from the Lok Sabha on December 8, 2023. The Ethics committee violated all rules, according to Moitra, who was not permitted to speak during the debate in the House. According to the expelled Lok Sabha MP, she was found guilty of violating a code of ethics that is “nonexistent.”

Mahua Moitra “may be expelled” from the Lok Sabha, according to the Ethics Committee report that looked into the TMC MP’s “unethical conduct.” The report also demanded that the federal government conduct a “time-bound, intense, legal, institutional inquiry.” Last month, the panel decided to adopt the report by a vote of 6 to 4. According to the report on Moitra’s cash-for-query case, despite multiple login attempts, she traveled to the United Arab Emirates four times between 2019 and 2023.
