Modi denounces civilian casualties in the war in West Asia.

Modi: On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his opinions on the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, saying that India vehemently denounces the deaths of civilians brought on by the horrific fighting. The leaders of Mauritius, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Kyrgyzstan were among those present at the second Voice of Global South Summit in New Delhi, where Modi made the following statement: “India has condemned the heinous terror attacks in Israel on 7 October.” Along with communication and diplomacy, we have urged moderation. We condemn with all our hearts the deaths of civilians in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Following our conversation with President Mahmoud Abbas of Palestine, we have dispatched humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.”

After Hamas militants killed over 1,200 people and kidnapped several Israelis on October 7, a series of terror rocket attacks across Israel erupted, sparking a crisis in West Asia and polarizing the Global South. Although some countries, including India, abstained, the UN General Assembly recently passed a resolution calling for a ceasefire in the fighting. Some others, including the Pacific island nations of Fiji and Nauru, voted against the resolution.

During his speech at the Voice of Global South summit, Modi primarily addressed India’s support of the group’s interests, especially through its G20 presidency.

The speaker highlighted the advancements achieved in the areas of climate finance, digital public infrastructure, sustainable development goals, and multilateral development banks (MDBs) reform. He also mentioned the African Union’s admission as a permanent member of the G20 as a significant accomplishment.

The Global South has always existed in terms of geography. However, this is the first time it has heard a voice like this. It has been made possible by our combined efforts. There are more than a hundred nations among us. However, Modi informed the leaders, “Our priorities and interests are similar.”
