IIT Madras Tops NIRF Rankings for 2024

for the sixth consecutive year, IIT Madras has secured the top spot in the National Institutional Ranking Framework NIRF 2024. This remarkable achievement underscores the institute’s commitment to academic excellence and innovations.

The NIRF rankings are based on a holistic assessment of institutions, considering factors such as teaching quality, research output, and student outcomes. The framework evaluates educational institutions on five broad parameters: teaching, learning, and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception.

In 2024, the NIRF introduced three new categories Open universities, Skill Universities, and State-funded universities. This expansion reflects the growing diversity of India’s higher education landscapes and provides a more nuanced picture of institutional excellence across various domains.

Overview of NIRF

The National Institutional Ranking Framework is a comprehensive system launched by the Ministry of Education in 2015 to evaluate and rank higher education institutions across India. This annual ranking covers 11 categories, including overall, university, engineering, and medical providing a holistic assessment of the country’s educational landscape.

The Indian Institutes of Technology continued their impressive showing in the NIRF Rankings 2024, with seven IITs securing spots in the top 10 overall institutions. While IIT Madras retained its crown, IIT Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, and Guwahati all featured prominently in the elite list.
