PM Modi Unveils Bhutan’s New Modern Hospital, Funded by India

PM Modi: On Saturday, March 23, Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened a modern hospital in Thimphu during his two-day visit to the country. The Indian government funds the Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuk Mother and Child Hospital, which aims to offer top-notch medical care, primarily to mothers and children. It stands for the solid development cooperation between Bhutan and India.

The hospital that the prime ministers of both nations jointly inaugurated shows how committed they are to raising a healthier next generation.

On his “X” handle, Prime Minister Modi announced the news, praising quality healthcare for giving several Bhutanese families hope.

The construction of the 150-bed hospital was done in two stages, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. At a cost of Rs 22 crore, the first was finished in 2019 and has been in use ever since. In contrast, the second was funded by Rs 119 crore and was started in 2019 following the first phase of the 12th Five-Year Plan.

The Ministry further emphasized that with its cutting-edge amenities in pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics, anesthesiology, operation theater, neonatal intensive care, and pediatric intensive care, this state-of-the-art facility will dramatically improve the quality of maternity and child healthcare services in Bhutan.

The move, according to a spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry Randhir Jaiswal, is a positive step for the two countries’ partnership. “The cutting-edge hospital is a shining example of India-Bhutan development cooperation,” he tweeted.

Bhutan’s Health Minister, Tandin Wangchuk, thanked India for its continued assistance in the field of health.

In addition, he alluded to plans to build a cancer hospital on the same campus, which would improve Bhutan’s postsecondary medical infrastructure and lessen the need for patients to travel to India for care.

To strengthen India’s unique relationship with the neighboring nation, Prime Minister Tobgay and King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck met with Modi during his two-day state visit to Bhutan. Modi announced a financial aid package worth Rs 10,000 crore over the next five years as part of India’s commitment to Bhutan.

PM Modi became the first foreign head of state to be awarded the coveted “Order of the Druk Gyalpo” when King Wangchuck gave it to him at a public ceremony. This award, which recognized his leadership focus on public welfare and his efforts to advance India-Bhutan relations, was given to him on Friday.

India and Bhutan have maintained diplomatic ties for a long time; they were founded in 1968. The cornerstone of this collaboration, which strengthens the countries’ long-standing ties, is the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, which was signed in 1949 and revised in February 2007.
