Rahul Gandhi appointed Lok Sabha Opposition Leader

Rahul Gandhi has been appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, announced senior Congress leader KC Venugopal on June 25. Venugopal mentioned that CPP chairperson Sonia Gandhi informed Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab about this decision, and other office bearers will be decided later.

Following their Tuesday meeting at the home of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, the leaders of the INDIA group made their decision.

Having served five terms as a Member of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi presently holds the seat of Rae Bareli in the Lok Sabha. Holding a copy of the Constitution, he took the oath of office as an MP on Tuesday.

Wayanad in Kerala and Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh are the two Lok Sabha constituencies that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi won. He relinquished the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in accordance with convention. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been selected by the Congress to run for the Wayanad seat. Additionally, this is Priyanka Gandhi’s first election.

Rahul Gandhi was pushed by party leaders to stand for the Lok Sabha’s Leader of Opposition position.

After a ten-year lapse, the Congress, the only opposition party with the most members, was elected opposition leader. In the previous two elections, it was unable to collect the requisite 10% of Lok Sabha MPs to win the seat.

During the Tuesday gathering at Kharge’s home, the opposition’s plan for the unusual Lok Sabha speaker election was also discussed. On Wednesday, June 26, the 18th Lok Sabha speaker will be chosen.

K Suresh and Om Birla, the respective candidates for the opposition INDIA alliance and the ruling NDA, have been announced. The INDIA bloc’s choice of eight-time MP K Suresh as the next Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha negated the top leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s attempts to come to an agreement.

Om Birla, the Kota MP for the BJP, also filed a nomination for the same post before to his. Birla presided over the 17th Lok Sabha as Speaker in the past.
